Sea Ray 260 Sundancer: The Sea Ray 260 Sundancer is a magnificent example of meticulous design and craftsmanship. This vessel’s streamlined lines and contemporary profile will immediately captivate your attention. Thanks to the meticulous attention to detail, Sea Ray’s dedication to excellence is evident in every nook and cranny.
Sea Ray’s American-made vessels have been continuously imported to Australia for nearly three decades, enhancing the lifestyles of boat owners. Celebrities, public figures, and other well-known figures have purchased them.
They have influenced Australian architects. They have been flop-molded! All of this indicates that Sea Ray has become a part of our nautical culture, producing boats that reflect our boating lifestyle. The Sea Ray Sundancer series is the traditional boat design with which the industry has come to identify and embrace the American invasion.
This narrow-beamed, low-profile sports cruiser emphasizes the outdoor lifestyle that yachting evokes while incorporating the intimacy, luxury, and comfort that overnighting and weekends offer a couple, a young family, or even two couples!
Sea Ray 260 Sundancer Review
The 260 Sundancer is the latest 2015 Sea Ray model, with new-look cabin windows and subtle changes to the hull shape. Despite being quite tall in comparison to its length, it manages to retain a sporty look, enhanced somewhat by its optional fiberglass arch, a swooping sheer line, and an even more dramatic hull line and rub rail.
Throughout the Sea Ray 260 Sundancer are indications of good engineering and design. From the extended swim platform to the bow with its well-secured sun pad, all deck space is maximized to pack in as much entertaining and lounging as possible.
Access is from either the rear platform through a portside gate or over the sides, topped with non-skid and integrated inboard steps. Both options have a grab rail. In the cockpit, the aisles are wide, and grab handles and drink holders abound.
Cockpit seating creates what Sea Ray calls a conversation area of lounges in a circle with room for nine or 10 people when the helm seat is reversed. A teak table is stored under the rear lounge and has two sets of aluminum posts that allow it to be used for lunch or lowered to make a wide sun lounge with the addition of extra cushions. There is also dedicated storage for all cushions and supports.
In addition to its forward-facing position, the rear section of the lounge converts to a sun pad or flips to make a rear-facing seat when the boat is at rest, making the swim platform even more accommodating. Along with the twin helm seats, the chaise lounge to port allows another two passengers to interact with the skipper underway.
Sea Ray has been a leader in development, styling, and finishing since the early 1970s when Reeson Marine Sydney introduced the first Sea Rays to Australia. However, the current appearance and finish of Sea Rays are quite different from those first introduced to Australia.
The Sea Ray Sundancer 260 is an ideal boat for entertaining a few friends for a day on the water or for my wife and me to get away for the weekend and escape the Monday through Friday grind.
For a day trip with companions, the cockpit has ample seating that converts to sun lounges, a wet bar, and a removable drinks/food cooler. The transom door and wide boarding platform are ideal for pier, marina, and water access. The cockpit liner, which is completely molded, is well-fitted. Because it is self-draining, the boat can be hosed down after a day’s excursion.
For a sports cruiser with an overall length of just under 8 meters, the cockpit is quite roomy and well-appointed, and this is perhaps the most appealing aspect of the boat. The bow access has been handled ingeniously, with the sliding cabin door molded to the shape of the stairs, making it simple to step up (when the cabin door is closed) and out onto the foredeck through the opening center panel of the screen.

Sea Ray 260 Sundancer Deck
Below decks, there is a compact but functional layout that can accommodate up to four individuals for an extended weekend cruise. The U-shaped bow lounge extends around the dinette table, which converts to a double berth when the table is lowered.
The midship berth retracts beneath the elevated forward portion of the cockpit. Although entering and exiting this double berth requires a bit of a squeeze between the end of the galley bench and the cockpit access steps, it is nonetheless a cozy and comfortable space.
For a vessel of this size, the galley and toilet are surprisingly well-appointed. The bathroom features full-liner molding, making it simple to maintain the space spotless. Even though a shower curtain is provided, you can anticipate a significant amount of cleansing and drying to be required after showering.
The galley is spacious, with ample storage and preparation facilities, and is equipped with a single-bowl sink, dual-voltage refrigerator, single-burner stove, trash can, and microwave option – essentially everything required for extended weekend trips.
Despite its single engine, this vessel is simple to maneuver and very maneuverable. There is not too much mass for the hull to be significantly affected by wind, and the boat can be maneuvered by engine and/or by hand into some of the more awkward berthing locations. It is not a boat designed for experts, so berthing or overnighting will not be a source of frustration.

Sea Ray 260 Sundancer Engine
Several engine options are available for the 260, and I do not doubt that some of these options will influence the 260’s agility and maneuverability. The tested vessel was powered by a 5.7-liter, 260-horsepower V8 MerCruiser, which proved to be well-suited to the vessel and was facilitated by the larger Bravo III leg. This unit, with its larger diameter propeller, bulkier foot, and larger cavitation plate, helps the boat plane more easily, swiftly, and smoothly and greatly improves the single-engined boat’s maneuverability.
During this test, I determined that the option with 260 horsepower is the smallest engine I would contemplate. Although it planned the boat without much exertion at 2600rpm and was capable of maintaining the plane and a level trim with four adults on board, the majority of our test time was spent cruising in the higher 3500 to 4000rpm range.
At 24 to 29 knots, the hull appeared to be riding at its best, and a lesser engine, such as the standard 220hp 5-liter V8, would likely be revving close to its limit to maintain these speeds for an extended period. Mid-range or high-end engine options will increase the initial price of the 260 Sundancer, but the additional power is well worth the cost.
Even though our test site at Broadwater wasn’t particularly rough, the Sundancer’s ride was exceptionally pleasant and comfortable. Even at higher cruising velocities, noise levels were extremely low, and the cockpit seating was reasonably sheltered from the wind and did not attract any spray.
Performance
With a moderate crosswind, the tabs kept the boat on an even keel, and the plane, the tabs came into effect for the best fore-and-aft ride and the most economical fuel burn. It’s a good addition to this style of high-riding sports boat, and while they seemed to work well, the tabs can be returned to manual at the touch of the control pad if you don’t agree with how they are operating.
The 300hp 5.7lt V8 MerCruiser 350 MPI has plenty of deep-throated rumble and had the efficiently-shaped hull planing at an impressive 10kts – no doubt helped by the superior drive of the big counter-rotating props. It felt rock stea,dy cruising at 24kts and around 3750r, pm cutting across the chop and wake of other boats. The Sea Ray’s 3500kg weight helps it belt through waves, and any larger wake is taken in its stride without undue banging or any of the fittings rattling loose.
I saw 34.2kts at 5000rpm, perhaps a bit under what I might have expected but not bad with a full load of fuel and a new engine – and plenty fast enough for a blast around your local waterway to a quiet anchorage for the day or perhaps a night or two on the water.
At higher speeds, handling is sporty and precise. In sharp, low-speed turns under power, it leans over and pushes water off its big shoulders but doesn’t dig its nose in for any nasty surprises.

Interior
Downstairs, the neatly laid-out cabin features a chic Prestige Cherry interior. Against the dark timber are cream walls and ceiling, and cushion fabric a lush beige. Thick marine carpet is sensibly protected by clip-off Sunbrella material to keep the interior looking pristine.
The vee-berth in the bow has a long table for dining and also converts to a large bed. So, with the mid-cabin double under the cockpit sole, a couple has options when overnighting to leave the dinette in place or share the space, albeit with limited privacy.
The cook gets an electric/alcohol single-burner cooktop and a sink with fresh hot water set into a granite-style Corian benchtop. A 22lt Microwave works from shore power or through an onboard inverter,r and there’s also a dual-power Dometic fridge-freezer.
Opposite the galley is an enclosed head with a vacuflush toilet, a hand-held shower, and a Corian vanity. The space has good ventilation, and the teak floor covering is a nice nautical touch. On a boat this size, you shouldn’t expect anything too spacious, so showering is a sit-down operation,n headroom isn’t overly generous. Happily, there’s a transom shower to enjoy as an alternative.
